ZITCO is a joint venture between TelOne, Chinese company Inspur and a Government-owned entity Flushcord Enterprises and is involved in the assembling of desktops, laptops, tablets, prepaid electricity meters, smart water meters and other technological gadgets.

The ZITCO commissioning comes as TelOne has also taken time to resuscitate its Msasa factory. The factory has been a key unit of TelOne with its ability to manufacture telecommunications network support equipment using technology. In an endeavour to modernise the factory, TelOne had embarked upon a number of initiatives to resuscitate the factory and the coming to life of the ZITCO Assembly Plant has been a launch pad for this strategic initiative.

ZITCO is the first ever ICT plant in Zimbabwe. It has already started operating with the first run of 2500 desktop computers and laptops having already been completed. ZITCO will now be moving towards full production where a production capacity of at least 50,000 and up to 150,000 ICT units can be achieved annually.  

ZITCO’s partnership with original device manufacturers like Microsoft and certification as an original equipment manufacturer is key in that it assures originality and guarantees the quality of its products.

Key Strategic Importance of the ZITCO Project:  

• Improving the supply of ICT devices to public sector workers in order to enhance    
• Government’s own internal efficiency and capacity to run   e-Government in line with National Development Strategy 1 and Vision 2030.  
• Lowering the cost of the devices through substituting local labour for foreign
• Making ICT devices more readily available to the general public in Zimbabwe  and in particular to the Education sector
• ICT Skills development and knowledge transfer to Zimbabwe
• Job creation and economic growth both within and in adjacent industries such as logistics, packaging and software development
• Reducing import bill through local production and ultimately generate foreign currency through exports into the sub-region.
